After more and more people need help after going on a coastal walk underprepared, we thought we’d give you a checklist of things you might need.
St Davids, Pembrokeshire has some of the most beautiful coastal walks in the world. It’s so spectacular to walk along the tempestuous cliff tops. You can often see seals and dolphins if you have an eager eye.
Footwear – sturdy footwear is an absolute necessity. A good walking boot is ideal but wellington boots are useful too if it’s rainy. Never leave the house in daps or flimsy trainers. You risk injury and having to waste emergency services time.
Waterproofs – We would recommend waterproof clothing regardless of the weather. St Davids is on a peninsula so the weather is very changeable. It often is hard to predict so don’t think that just because the weather forecast looks good the weather will behave itself!
Snacks – Often you will need to up the blood sugar level to get you through a lengthy walk. Biscuits and chocolate bars are a great way to have a quick hit of sugar. Especially if you have young children, snacks are a must.
Map and phone – Even if you have a phone (and you should bring one!), always have a map as well. Sometimes phones don’t get reception so never rely on GPS or Sat Nav. A map can be invaluable if you get a little disorientated.
Overall, it’s about common sense. Stay away from the cliff edges, respect the landscape and never litter. If you do all these, you’ll have a fantastic time!
Yewdale Cottage is ideal for walking holidays and you can access many different coastal walks from our cottage.
